This means that instead of growing directly more powerful as the player progresses, the player will instead simply have more options available to them, and be able to use many different builds, of roughly the same relative power. In Veloren, to prevent players from completely overwhelming the world around them, the aim is to eliminate this as much is as reasonable, instead aiming for a more "horizontal" style of progression. This is known as a "vertical" style of progression. By comparing their endgame stats to their earlygame ones, there is a clear progression of power. In most games, as the player fights, kills bosses, loots equipment, and levels up, they grow more powerful. Players can choose to play any number of various roles, identically to any NPCs can be. The role of the players in this world is to help influence the world as it develops. Over time, the world will grow and develop, various factions will rise and fall, and towns and kingdoms will grow, develop, trade with each other, form alliances, war with the various in-game factions, and die. Its most defining feature is the simulation of the world the players and NPCs inhabit, similarly to games like Dwarf Fortress. Veloren is an multiplayer RPG with singleplayer capability.
